Rheap said at 7:33 a.m. on Oct 13, 2007: Plenty of great shots here, the panoramic ones are really nice, and the rainbow shots are very well captured, but the one I like most is the one with the driftwood in the foreground, this is fantastic!! Superb composition, and making full use of the foreground like this gives it great perspective, Splendid!!!
PaulBarfoot said at 7:54 a.m. on Oct 13, 2007: Wow! Whether the results are because of new inspiration or new equipment, I would just like to say "thank you" to the friend who gave you the camera as well as to you for using it so effectively. My TCG comment - personal fave and group feature!

Ray, Bertil,Noreen, and Jerii, the shot of the driftwood in the foreground is a favourite of mine, so it's confirming to hear that you also think it's well done.
Paul, you flatter me! :) Not all of the shots were taken with the new camera however. Since I had had the chance to check out it's menus and features before our trip, and we were concerned about battery life, Alison opted to just use our little Coolpix 3200, so everything she took was with the old camera, and everything I took was with the new one. We did however try to push the limits of our cameras to see what they can do, and even though I don't think that the shots of the rainbow or moonlight are anything but just ok; I like them, but it was more of a 'you had to be there, moment. I was so excited when I saw it, I just rushed down to the shore without the tripod and started shooting, and when I realized that it was infact a FULL rainbow, I didn't have the where-with-all to try to figure out how to get a good panarama with the new camera, and the light was fading too quickly to rush off to another location. I'm pleased with what I did capture however, and I'm really looking forward to learning how to use this new camera more effectly!
Annelies, Yes, please sing! <grin> Got anything romantic in your repertoire?
Pam, I know! It was so cool, a couple of dykes going camping and being greeted on their first night with a rainbow!
Nancy thank you very much, I was trying to convey what I felt was the mood of the Pass. :)
And again, thank you all very much for stopping in and having a look, and leaving such generous comments! :)
Decoy said at 4:05 p.m. on Oct 13, 2007: Lovely tabblo, with many great pics in it! I love the first one with it's compositions and motives. The driftwoods are gorgeous thanks to wonderful colours including nuances from white to black. Well done, and it's so fun to hear your interest for photography, and that you are learning your cameras! Well done!
A discussion for tc: I've been thinking why I'm not a fan of panoramas. I'm not against it by any means, but it's a format I very seldom use for myself. The 10 x 15 format is very close in proportions to the rule of the third, so it's a harmonical format. If I do crop my pictures I almost always try to keep the original proportions, so that it always looks like a 10 x 15. (If not a square, wich is a format I'm very fond of.) I think we all look for harmonical compositions IN the pictures, but that we sometimes forgets to crop the pictures harmonical. I do NOT say that 10 x 15 is the only format, the rules of the third cam be applied on many other formats.. it's only to use the calculator, and you can have a format according to the rule! I've been thinking of this matter a great deal lately. Your panorama made me think of it again, and now I'm adressing my thoughts! :) Knowing you love discussions! =)
JuDeck said at 9:06 p.m. on Oct 13, 2007: Great tabblo Gals! My favs are the first and the all time fav, the driftwood shots from Dar....with the latter you've mastered the depth of field as well as the point of view with this shot. Ali, I LOL'd with your fixation with the ferries....?? ;)....in any event the favs on yours is the one left of the driftwood, the framing is great on that and the one with the low hanging clouds above the boat...it's close to a fishey effect. Hope there's more shots on the way.

Hej Anna! Sorry I took so long in responding to your discussion; yes I do love them, but I've been a bit scattered lately. I too generally like to stick with the format of the photo I have taken. I feel that I've done my best in framing it while shooting it, so that is what I want to show. Sometimes though what you want to capture doesn't fit well within the borders of normal sized photo, and that's where I think cropping comes in. The top shot of the ferry with the moonlight was just such a photo. There was the moon on the left, and there was the ferry on the right. I liked the two focal points spread apart like that, but there was so much on the top and bottom of the photo that was uninteresting so I decided to crop it off. Another reason for cropping I think is dictated by how you are using the photo and the what the layout demands, and the other two shots of the ferries seemed to fit well with the layout design I was working on. I do agree with you about keeping the original format when dealing with an individual images, but I think when creating something from a collection of photos it is less restricting to think outside of the 10 x 15 box.
As far as the rule of thirds goes, I've never been one much for applying rules, especially when it has anything to do with being creative. The whole notion of using a calculator when deciding how to frame a photo feels much too sterile to me; I'd much rather just go with my gut. <grin>
Jude thank you for your saying that I mastered the depth of field in the driftwood shot, but I can't rightly take the credit for mastering it when I didn't know what I was doing. <grin> soon though, I'm working on it. ... and Alison's ferry fixation, ... well, we were camping next to Active Pass. :)
