Hole-In-The-Rock: Historic Landmark

Above:  The crack (or Hole) that the pioneer wagons entered at the canyon rim.   The crack was barely wide enough to allow passage.  Rear wheels were chained to cause them to drag. Ropes or chains were attached to the rear to allow all available hands to help resist the descent.

Upper Right:  Inscriptions from the late 1800s when a mining company set up operations for a short time.

Right:  The Lake now covers the river that the pioneers crossed, another 300 feet below the waves today.   The climb out on the other side was almost as difficult as the descent into the river.
