Dry Fork Slot Canyons

      October 9, 2007 - Grand Staircase Escalante

At mile 27 of the Hole-in-the-Rock road there is a left turn-off that takes you to the Dry Fork Trailhead.   A short descent gets you to the Dry Fork Narrows and three slot canyons- Peekaboo, Spooky, and Brimstone.  The three slots are approximately parallel to each other, with Brimstone a little farther down the Dry Fork wash and more inaccessible on hot days.   Peekaboo is arched and pooled near its entrance.   Spooky is not for the large framed hiker, very narrow!  Brimstone is darker, as if blackened by fire--hence the name?

An open section of Peekaboo

Muddy pools and dryfalls were easier to negotiate with a rope near the entrance to Peekaboo

Stemming to enter or exit the slot is neccessary

Climbing out of the slot to a narrow wash.

Typical tight passage in Spooky

October blooms in the wash to Brimstone

Huge sand dune on the lee side of the canyon to Brimstone

The muddy pools: made climbing slippery and potentially dangerous.... and dirty!

High stepping

Beautiful perfect weather for the outdoors

Brimstone gets tight!

Water obstacle in B rimstone. Stemming to get a better look at what is ahead.

A good place to turn around

More wonders of nature but what strikes me about these images is how they look so much like a bunch of kids playing in a park with some sort of climbing setup. Dirty muddy feet too. What's not to like?

Another good set of photos. At least the pools weren't deep (we didn't see any wet shorts). The mud looks like more fun than we'd want to have!!
