BRYCE Oct 2, 2007

Bryce Canyon National Park,  Southern Utah

After a hard evening rain on the previous night, we arrived at the rim between Sunset and Sunrise Points before daylight.   We huddled therein the early morning frost with a small crowd of early rising photographers.   The light swept over the east facing spires as shutters clicked.   People milled about quietly, looking for new scenes to capture, and eventually spreading out and disappearing into the coral pink hoodoos.

We started our hike from Sunrise Points, into Queen's Court, down Navajo Trail.  Eventually we linked with Peekaboo Trail to extend our walk to the Windows section of the Canyon.   We finished several hours later with a dramatic ascent through Wall Street and out at Sunset Point.

The formations in the first photo are called hoodoos --tall thin spires of rock that protrude from the bottom of arid basins and badlands. No where in the world are they as abundant as in the northern section of Bryce Canyon National Park. when I saw them in person, they reminded me of ancient people.
