butterflies and moths

these were taken at a butterfly garden circa july of 2007...while i appreciate their work in promoting the interests of these insects, i was saddened to see the conditions of their wings...possibly from the excessive handling and other hazardous situations these creatures have to endure in a place like this.

Stunning! The worn wings may just be a function of age, or flying up against the barrier to the outdoors. I doubt the butterflies get handled at all, at least they don't in our butterfly pavilion in Albuquerque.

Beautiful butterflies! I've seen a number of butterflies this summer with 'messed up' wings...ones in the wild, so perhaps it is age.

thank you very much EVERYONE for your kindness, your comments mean A LOT to me.

NANCY & CONNIE: before entering the enclosure, they briefed everybody about the importance of leaving the butterflies alone, unfortunately some of the children in their innocence seem to think of these gentle insects as pets...also the crowds of visitors sometimes do not notice when these fragile creatures land on the pathways (as evidenced by the number of squashed insects on the cement paths). Nancy, you are probably right about them flying against the barriers though...maybe im just naive or maybe im some kind of romantic, but i really dislike seeing these beautiful bugs unable to roam free through the gardens and fields...

Beautiful tabblo ! The first pic reminds me of a poor Butterfly (exactly the same one) I found on the road, it was badly hurt and had lost its head and half of the wings. I brought it home, It lived for two days and died last week :-( I felt so helpless because I couldn't do anything to save it. I still feel so sad when I think about it. God bless that innocent soul.

Gorgeous butterflies, the coloring is amazing. I am torn, I agree with you that these beautiful creatures should be left in the wild, but then again, we probably would never get to observe such beauty without a butterfly pavilion such as this. I don't know...either way, great Tabblo.

These are wonderful Woody! The texture of the brown butterfly's wings in the first and fourth shots is incredible! I also love the eighth shot and the one directly beneath it. ... and your commentary about creatures having to endure places like this, but you still being able to appreciate the benefits of them, I totally agree with! Very Nice tabblo! :-)

I thought the same when I visited the House of Butterflies (see my tabblo), but it is the everlasting problem about zoos. It is very difficult to manage them, but simetimses they help to preserve animals that are extinguishing. Sometimes they help children to see, to know and to love animals. It all depends on adultes and how they manage it. Yours photos are always perfect.

Stunning shots Woody. I know it isn't easy to photograph some of these butterflies. Only last week I visited a butterfly garden in a zoo nearby and the biggest problem I had was that I could not get clear shots because of the damp. And also some of the butterflies were so quick that I couldn't keep up with them. Great work!

Well done. I really enjoyed all your Tabblos. Very diverse set of subjects. You have a great eye for this. Besides the butterflies I particularly enjoyed "Flights of Fancy" and "Kalaniana's old beach" as well as the Private series. Great shots of Navy Pier right here in my neck o' the woods too.
