Celebrating the Spring Festival with the Mosuo

Spring Festival Period - January 25-February 5, 2006

The Spring Festival is celebrated throughout most Asian countries; in Mosuo villages, all work stops, and days are filled visiting fellow villagers and nearby villages, as well as with religious festivals, ceremonies, singing and dancing, and plenty of homemade Baijiu (China's national liquor) and Sulima (a Mosuo liquor).

According to Mosuo custom, each Spring Festival children get new clothing; thirteen year olds have a coming of age ceremony and wear traditional Mosuo clothing.

In the evenings during the Spring Festival, the entire village gathers around a campfire and performs traditional songs and dances.  The elders walk around passing out candy, Baiju and Sulima to the villagers, including the children.
