JE ME SOUVIENS! not really some of these photos are from before 1976? fuddle duddle has an airport named after him, Tom Berenger at Mc Gill?????? these b&w portraits are per-fect. I spot the MGB, I think the bus is on De Maisonneuve near Benn's (now closed). love this tab.
LatentE said at 4:57 p.m. on Nov 13, 2007:
Berenger was in a B movie, "In Praise of Older Women," which I've never seen. The street is Guy between Ste-Catherine and De Maisonneuve. I think the car is an XKE. The woman at the top with the brilliant eyes is originally from Morocco. Her eyes are actually very dark but the sun was reflecting through them.

I feel like I just stepped back in time...... I had almost forgotten about Fuddle Duddle. Great collection well presented.
Leftofcenter said at 5:01 p.m. on Nov 13, 2007:
what about Tennessee Williams? was that in Montreal too?
LatentE said at 5:11 p.m. on Nov 13, 2007:
All images were taken in Montreal. Williams came to Montreal for a first ever presentation of one of his plays in French. I don't remember if it was a particular play or any of his plays. It was a press conference in what I remember then being called Place Desjardins.

hey Latent! These are just so darn cool. and so darn great. Your photography skills amaze. Did you attend an art school? I love all these iconic images...and the little lego boy. what a capture.

Wow! You have been around! Great photos. Are you sure this isn't an issue of Life Magazine?
LatentE said at 5:50 p.m. on Nov 13, 2007:
Thanks everyone for the kind comments. Pam, never went to art school and I too like that picture of the cute girl with the building blocks. She has a worried look that's far beyond her years. After Lefty reminded me in another tabblo I remembered what "fuddle duddle" meant. It was a Cheney sort of senate greeting thirty years before.

Awesome tabblo, great!
Pkeener said at 6:00 p.m. on Nov 13, 2007:
well, the sweet face does look like a girl, but it was the 70's so...long locks were not a giveaway. again, just love to drink in these beautiful black and whites...nothing like film

LatentE said at 6:13 p.m. on Nov 13, 2007:
When I first heard that Mary Hopkin song it reminded me of the worker songs from the prior generation's struggle for worker rights. It had an addictive tune and words easily understood. It was a song to sing along with. It was a bit out of place then. It's really so now, but then after the coming depression hits ..
Leftofcenter said at 6:18 p.m. on Nov 13, 2007:
that song was written by Lennon & McCartney about their beginnings at the Cavern (in the song changed to TAVERN) in Liverpool, I didn't google this, I'm just a huge Beatles fan!
Debdog said at 6:31 p.m. on Nov 13, 2007:

"fuddle-duddle" perfect name for our ex-prime minister. Love all the shots...I used to live in the Cantlie House on sherbrooke and Peele. Leonard Cohen was 'just' a writer then. AH! memories!!!!

Great set of images. This is a tab I will come back to several times I think. Love the shots of Williams and Fuller in particular!
LatentE said at 2:02 p.m. on Nov 19, 2007:
Thanks again everyone for the generous comments. Rhonda, as Lefty noted, the song was made famous by Mary Hopkin but was a Lennon-McCartney tune, Hopkin specifically selected to release the song because of the sound of her voice. I guess it was an English "pub" song. I vaguely remember a very square television show in Canada called "The Pig and Whistle," which was about the music in an English pub.

Maybe I was too cute or everyone knew, but the image I labeled "The Edible Woman" is of the author of that same book, along with others, Margaret Atwood.
ViqiFrench said at 8:09 a.m. on Nov 27, 2007:
This is so very engaging. Love "Speechless" -- made me smile. And the bird's eye view on the huge crowd is impeccable!!
LatentE said at 9:04 a.m. on Nov 27, 2007:
Thanks Viqi. The crowd picture was of one of the many, then world wide, demonstrations for the release of Soviet "refusenik" Anatoly Sharansky, whose face is on the poster in the picture. The shot was taken from an upper floor apartment of an adjacent building. The people who had the apartment were kind enough to let photographers in to get the high angled shot. The Soviet consulate was on that block.

"Speechless" was from a mime class taught by a British professor. Not French, surprisingly. The man in the picture was happy to vogue for the camera. Unfortunately I don't remember his name.
