Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness
Legendary kingdoms of Nagar and Hunza along the banks of Kunjrab, Hunza and Gilgit rivers lured travelers, pilgrims, invaders and traders since ancient times. Invaders and trade caravans toiled through strenuous mountain terrain and arduous snow covered passes to access central Asia, India and China. Eric Shipton calls this region ‘the ultimate manifestation of mountain grandeur…rich, fecund and of an ethereal beauty’. Hunza River flows through a dense cluster of 7000m peaks since times immemorial. Karakuram Highway [a marvel of modern engineering] winds its way into China through Khunjrab pass [4733m] as tree lines around it shift color from green to yellow, red, amber and gold from Jaglot to Sost and valleys beyond. Autumn comes to North Pakistan and gradual transition of temperate summer into cold winter begins.
