The Staircase: Saranac Lake, NY 1978

I was doing darkroom work at this time in my life. Mostly black/white, but some color. These images are recent scans of color negatives I developed in 1978 but never printed.  My idea at the time was to contrast the rigid geometrical pattern of the stairs, emphasized by fixed positition of the camera on a tripod, with a flow of people.  Some of the negatives didn't survive.

Allan. I love that you thought of this idea. I am amused by the expressions on the subjects...trying not to look, but not resisting. That last shot is a classic. the setup is very interesting. I love the flow of the banister going out to the horizon, away from the photo, and the two vents make such nice anchors to the composition. The setting is more intriguing to me than the people, except for their clothes. Is this a 50mm or wider? Very little distortion. Never got a color head. B&W was enough of a challenge for me and my pocketbook. Thanks for the Tabblo!

It's difficult to make good pictures of old negatives, but it's very pleasing to recover these "pearls" for the digital period !

I love the idea, and the photos are so cool - and the last one is very special or very classic as Pam wrote =)

Une recherche très intéressante avec en toile de fond l'émotion du passé. Mention spéciale pour la dernière image. Merci.

Thank you all for the thoughtful comments. Leftof: always continuing. Pam: 50mm. lens, either Nikon from work, or my Rollei SLR. I did very little color work, seemed too rigid compared to all the variation possible with b/w. I had access to the community college darkroom at the time.

ElZorroTox: that's one of the things that makes combing through the archives fun.

I love the idea! too bad some of the negatives didn't survive; I really would have liked to see more of these, especially in keeping with the theme. You have just enough shots here though to get that concept across, and it's very cool to see the fashion of the time... Hmmm, think I saw someone wearing a shirt like that the other day. <g>
