My impression is that copyright is at the heart of the writer's strike though - whether writers copyright ownership rights can be extended to other media and formats from the original form, or are the writers simply "work for hire," with no rights beyond their salary. It's ironic that the motion picture industry once considered other forms of distribution (VHS and Betamax video tapes) as a lone woman facing the Boston Strangler.
Jack Valenti, President of the Motion Picture Association Of America, before Congress: "I say to you that the VCR is to the American film producer and the American public as the Boston strangler is to the woman home alone."
Now that lone woman doesn't want anyone else to have a piece of her action with the Boston Strangler. :P
Disney owns ABC and you may one day need to get some work from them, so like much of America, where jobs are controlled by fewer and fewer more powerful people, one has to be careful what one says.
