Family Visit to Cornwall

Overlooking cliffs near Newquay

Over the Easter break, we made a family visit to Cornwall.   Cornwall is located on the western edge of England.   It is the part of England that juts out into the sea.    It is a very scenic location with fascinating vistas of the ocean, good waves for surfing or bodyboarding and plenty of fun family things to do.

Ava & William on the hay bales

One of our first visits consisted of a farm for the kids.   Ava and William sat on hay bales, pet farm animals, rode ponies, and drove tractors (well, not really).   Ava and William had a great time in a real-life farm.    Cornwall is almost caught in a time warp with many old-fashioned farming practices and equipment.

An ice cream smile

Cornwall is known for it's creams and ice creams.   As you can see, Ava had her fill of ice cream.   It really is good!

Since it was Easter, the kids spent some time collecting Easter eggs hidden near a living maze (a maze of shrubs)

Ava, paddle right!

One of the best parts of the trip, was a trip to Lappa Valley Steam Railway Park.   We first rode on a real steam engine.    The steam engine took us to another part of the park where we rode other trains and canoed.   Ava also slid down a really tall slide -- what a daredevil she is.

The weather was good (a little chilly, but that's normal for England) and all the family had a good time.   I really enjoyed riding in the steam engine train and watch it chug along.

Hold on William. This train is moving fast

Wow...now that's a slide

I never thought I'd bodyboard in a wetsuit in England

There were a couple things we had to do before leaving Cornwall:

- I bodyboarded in the freezing ocean with a wet suit (still was cold, though)

- We ate pasties.   Pasties are traditional Cornish food.

- We enjoyed the sunsets looking out of our room at dusk

- Oh, by the way, when we were driving back, we saw Stonehenge.  Sunshine took some pictures as we were driving by.

Sunshine & Jared - this is a fantastic idea. It gives all the folks at home a 'real' taste of England and gives us expats some great vacation ideas.... just shows how to make your own fun in spite of the 'dodgy' weather!
