Sweetwater Wind Power

Standing here along US70 south of Sweetwater, Texas surrounded by new wind generators in the midst of, at this time (July 2007),  the largest online wind generator plant in the USA.  This is really three projects from '03, '05, and '07 with a total of 505 MWs. This facility uses GE Wind 1.5-MW (176); Mitsubishi 1-MW (135); Siemens 2.3-MW (46) units in the three phases. There is no information center; I got this information from the internet.

While taking the "trespassing" pictures, the rancher drove over and we actually had a nice chat. He didn't have any of the units on his land but I didn't pursue the whys; he did allude to "not liking their terms".  There are "hundreds" of them (about 350, actually), he said. And for ranchers who "aren't good at their job", it is easier to take the generous pay from the power companies than raise cattle. The old cultures don't change easily.

Nor did he care if I took pictures but really didn't like people going across his cattle guard, no matter how courteous he appeared. This is a part of the Texas culture: be nice but firm. He didn't leave until I got in my vehicle and turned around.

This is a problem all over the world. In my country there arent' so large lands to put wind generator s in. We have to choose between protection of natura l and artistic beauties and the need of energy. Thanks. Ciao

HEY!
Don't mess with Texas, y'hear?

Do you have any guesstimations about the "terms" that the friendly but firm rancher didn't like?
Thanks for the info- very interesting!

Not really. I figure it has something to do with access. Obviously they will want access to the windmills whenever they choose. Or, since this was the ONLY ranch along here with a cattleguard instead of a gate (which seemed odd with his suspicion/dislike of strangers), they would require him to keep the ranch secured from crazy photographers and other terrorists. :)
