Team Building 2006

Pulau Jerejak is located about 5km from Penang Island, or to be exact, right in front of the Free Industrial Zone (FIZ). Most of the factories here overlooks Jerejak and therefore it is quite a popular place to hold company events such as seminar or team building sessions.

Some history, it is believed that Sir Francis Light first set foot here before proceeding to Penang Island itself. Before Georgetown was made the capital city of Penang, there were plans to make the South Eastern (Bayan Lepas area) side of Penang as the main port, naming it Jamestown. Unfortunately there was a malaria outbreak at that particular area and they changed their plans and move north, where Fort Cornwallis (in Georgetown) is now.

There's a long list of history about Jerejak Island itself. But it is most famous (or infamous, actually) as the Alcatraz of Malaysia. Among people sent there were those labelled as hardcore criminals, people involved in the narcotics industry and also ISA detainees.

Our team building started as early as 8 am. We took the first ferry to Jerejak and had a light breakfast first before starting out beach games (more like Sukantara).

Followed after was the wall climbing and abseiling. I managed to do both tasks. It was quite terrifying when the instructor left me to 'free-fall' from the top of the wall climbing station. I still haven't conquered my fear of heights, or actually fear of falling (from high places).
