The graffiti is long gone now, but when I visited Ground Zero in the Summer of 2002 it was everywhere.

It's also possible, there, to see the pictures in their original sizes, which can reveal a lot of detail which is not apparent here.
I was well out of harm's way, a good fifty blocks north, on 9/11/2001 -- although I wasn't sure that was the case at the time. I could not get in touch with my wife or, even more frighteningly, my kids, for hours. When I finally did reach someone at my daughter's school the person to whom I spoke didn't seem to quite comprehend the magnitude of what had happened. My wife finally got through to me and we agreed that she would drive down (however long that would take) and pick Ruth up at school. We could not reach my son's school, in the Bronx, at all. He ended up being misinformed and therefore missing the bus that would have gotten him past the police cordon, back into Manhattan. We had to drive into the Bronx that evening to collect him and queue up at a police checkpoint to get back home. I had no access to public transportation for a few hours so I hiked uptown about forty blocks until the subways seemed to be running halfway normally.
Any feelings of pride I had at having weathered the crisis successfully were dispelled when I heard of my neighbors who had to flee the World Trade Center, wounded, choking and terrified and of other neighbors, people who had lived within a few blocks of me, who had died trying to save people trapped in the WTC.
I only had the heart to visit Ground Zero in the summer of 2002. These pictures are from that first visit.
