People have the ability to wear blinkers & ignore the plight of strangers. Maybe it's a survival tactic. We all have our own problems to muddle through, and should (but can't) rely on government to make the streets safe, ensure that no one has to sleep on a bench, and protect us from the gradual spiralling down into a drug & gun culture. Unfortunately, taxes are wasted on pointless wars, and society suffers as a whole.
