I'm wondering about the red stripes. They seem out of place other than on the woman's dress.

The red stripes are part of the religious symbolism which these temples incorporate. The red stripes are suggestive of an abiding faith in the supremacy of Vishnu ,the preserver as against Shiva the destroyer who presides over death and whose followers wear horizontal white marks .The schism between the Vaishnavaites (followers of Vishnu) and the Shavaites is reflected in all that they do ,although together Vishnu and Shiva perform the preservative and destructive functions in a complementary fashion while the third one ,the Creator ,Brahma performs the replacement functions. These three form the Trinity of the Hindu pantheon.
